Meet Alison
Alison Mariella Désir is a mental health counselor with a deep interest in the connection between physical and mental health. Her own personal journey with depression and finding running as a helpful coping mechanism sparked a curiosity in her that ultimately led her to become a therapist.
Alison specializes in supporting individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and trauma, with a particular interest in race-based trauma. Beyond her therapeutic practice, she is an accomplished author, the host of a PBS show, and a globally recognized advocate for racial equity in all spaces.
Alison holds BA in History, an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Regional Studies, and an EdM in Counseling Psychology, all from Columbia University. Alison resides outside Seattle with her family.
My Philosophy
I believe that the personal is political.
I believe that all human beings are capable of change.
I believe that all human beings deserve to live full lives.
I believe that therapy and nature are essential for our wellbeing.
How would I describe myself as a therapist?
I believe in a holistic approach to mental health. As an endurance athlete, I believe deeply in the positive connection between mental and physical health and the opportunity to get outside. My clinical interests include working with marginalized/minority populations, eating disorders, body image, and addiction. I approach my personal and professional life from a feminist and social justice framework and enjoy building communities centered on wellness.
Why does therapy work? What is the mechanism of change?
The therapeutic relationship is critical to creating change. I provide clients with a sense of safety and comfort that allows them to see new possibilities and ways of approaching problems. I work to create a nonjudgemental, warm space so that clients can show up as their authentic selves.
What is a feminist theoretical perspective?
A feminist theoretical perspective is a framework that recognizes gender inequity, societal injustice, and the needs of marginalized populations. Feminist therapy considers the ways that gender roles, power dynamics and social inequities impact our mental health and well being.
What to expect
All sessions will be conducted via video chat. We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. All you’ll need is a device (computer, laptop, tablet or phone), internet and some privacy. You will receive a link prior to our session.
I will create a warm space for you to feel supported and empowered, allowing you to show up as your full, authentic self. I can be both playful and direct, at times prompting you with questions and at other times, allowing for intentional silence and deep thinking.
Together we will work to meet your stated goals, uncover new ways to approach your problems, and increase your self awareness and strengths.
